Meet Fred. Fred is the newest member of the MPEX Rental Department, which at this point, is probably the most helpful and friendly rental department in all the land. Fred is cool as a cucumber. He is a portrait photographer, and a musician, and is always looking to do something creative, or at least have a laugh. Stop by and tell Fred some jokes. If  you can’t make him laugh, you are probably not funny. Check him out on Facebook to see his work, or stop into the Rental Department to say hello.

The key light is a LumoPro 22″ Beauty Dish.  On the right side of Fred is a 12×36 stripbox with a grid to control light spill. I used a Magnum Reflector on the background, which allows me to focus the beam of light on the backdrop to the size needed. I have said it before on this blog, but the beauty dish is really a great modifier for men. Because of the name “beauty dish”, I think it can easily be overlooked when shooting men, but it is a life saver in a world with almost too much “soft” light. In addition to the beauty dish the strip just gives some definition and exposure on the right side of the frame, helping add some nice contrast. I used a Nikon D610 camera body, with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4 G lens,  and three Profoto B1 500 AirTTL heads. Amazing set up, all around.
