Listen Up! An Audio equipment guide for Content Creators and filmmakers

If you’re a content creator, videographer, podcaster, or production recorder and editor, then you know (or may have discovered through trial) that audio is a crucial element of content creation and videos. Poor audio quality or lack of audio can distract from the main message and visuals, while good audio enhances and supports the overall experience. With that in mind, having the right audio tools is essential for good content creation. Midwest Photo offers a range of audio equipment, including wireless microphones, shotguns, boom poles, and field recorders.

I’ve gathered equipment recommendations categorized by creative interest or profession, that I believe can be valuable. Keep in mind that different tools work for different people, so experimentation is key!

For the everyday Content Creator.

Whether you use the best phone in the market or a DSLR, these gear pieces can level up your production. Easy enough to learn quickly and set up on the go or when creativity strikes!

TASCAM DR-10L Mini Portable Recorder with Lavalier Microphone ($199): This budget-friendly option is excellent for grabbing audio. It records directly to an SD card, eliminating the need for a separate transmitter. I’ve used it at weddings and successfully captured both the bride’s and groom’s voices—even when clipped only to the groom!

DJI MIC 2 (1 Transmitter) ($219): A small mic with high-quality audio recording capabilities. It features great noise cancellation and supports 32-bit floating-point internal recording. Compatible with cameras, smartphones, computers, and tablets.

Rode Wireless Pro ($399): While it’s a higher investment, this wireless mic kit offers two high-end lavalier microphones. It boasts state-of-the-art Series IV 2.4 GHz digital transmission and works universally with cameras, smartphones, and computers.

Rode Wireless GO II Dual Channel Compact Wireless System($199): If you love Rode but aren’t ready for a significant investment, this alternative is perfect. It includes a single mic and transmitter with the same IV 2.4 GHz digital transmission. Plus, it has USB-C and iOS digital output.

For the Professional/Enthusiast

We recommend several audio equipment options: the Rode VideoMic NTG shotgun mic, the Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun mic, and the Zoom H4Essential recorder. As someone involved in creating short films, promo videos, and high-quality event recaps, these audio gadgets prove invaluable in various settings. For the fast-paced, on-the-go scenarios typical of event coverage, shotgun mics are your best companions. Midwest Photo offers both the Videomic NTG Rode shotgun mic and the Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun.

The Rode VideoMic NTG ($249) pairs seamlessly with DSLRs and compact cameras—whether mounted on-camera, used as a boom mic, or attached to a pistol grip. It also functions as a USB microphone, allowing connection to computers, tablets, or smartphones when needed. With a USB-C output and headphone monitoring, this mic’s internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides over 30 hours of recording time.

The Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun mic ($329) excels in video production, handling demanding film challenges. Its switchable “Low Cut” filter minimizes wind noise. If your camera lacks phantom power, the MKE 600 can also run on batteries. While both options represent a higher investment, they offer long-lasting performance across a variety of video projects.

For the studio set-ups and short film productions the Zoom H4Essential ($199) is amazing. It offers 4-track 32-bit float recorder with Dual A/D Converters and Clip-free recording, so no need to set gain! Paired with a boom mic and XLR cord you can get even better precise aim and clarity of your audio. Without mics, the Zoom H4Essential still picks up room tone and voices really well and can be placed close by if needed to be hidden.

For Podcasters, Streamers, and Music Creators.

Midwest Photo stocks two models of the Godox EM 68 mic: the EM 68 RGB USB condenser mic and the EM68G RGB USB condenser mic with Bluetooth control via an app.

The EM 68 ($79) delivers clear, professional sound with its cardioid pickup mode and built-in high-density sponge to protect against pops and plosives.

The EM68G ($169) boasts four pickup patterns (Cardioid, Bidirectional, Stereo, and Omnidirectional), making it ideal for podcasting, recording, streaming, and gaming. Plus, the colorful atmosphere light on top adds a fun touch—you can switch between different stylish light effects! For a complete desk or studio setup, consider accessories like the Godox desk-mounted boom arm($44), the Rode DS2 desktop studio arm($90), or the Rode PSA1+ professional studio boom arm($129).

We hope these gear recommendations help guide you to a successful soundtrack in your upcoming project or production!
