The Camera You Have

When I was on my way into a convenience store, this gentleman asked me, “That camera your new toy?”

I vaguely affirmed, answering while walking into the store. I had the Fuji X100T hanging from my shoulder and I did kind of wish it was my new toy. Just a loaner from the MPEX Rentals Department, though.

On the way back out of the store I asked him if I could take his picture. He said, “Sure, as long as I can take your picture, too.’  I don’t usually ask people to take their picture in the street, it’s just not something I am in the habit of doing. He seemed harmless, and  interestingly premeditated in his quirkiness. Like his idiosyncrasies have been refined over and over through the years.

He really wanted to show me how good his camera phone was, and he took several pictures of me. When he showed them to me, they were blurry from a slow shutter speed, but he was so happy that his phone was able to capture what he considered to be great photo quality. He was amazed by it and proud of it. One of them was actually pretty good. I feel like he would love Instagram, but he will probably be fine face to face with random photographers, bonding over the image quality of these modern devices. Hey, maybe he  has 100k followers on Instagram already.

He was really jazzed when I pointed out the dramatic clouds in the sky. We both took a couple of shots, and he was more excited than ever to show me more of his photos. We chatted for a second, and then I was on my way back to The Learning Studio. I didn’t catch his name, but I hope that he keeps smiling at his photos, and sharing with anyone.
