This Week in the World looks at this week’s most interesting stories out of the photo world.
Nikon announced three new cameras in their COOLPIX line.
The Nikon COOLPIX A is a one-of-a-kind Nikon camera that produces high-resolution photos with a 16.2-MP CMOS sensor and Full HD 1080p videos. For exceptional image quality, it employs a Nikon DX-format CMOS sensor just like Nikon’s D Series DSLR lineup, but in a compact body. It features a NIKKOR 28mm F2.8 lens for your depth of field needs. Plus, if you want to instantly share photos with friends, you can accessorize with Nikon’s patented WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter (optional).
The Nikon COOLPIX P330 utilizes a 12.2-MP 1/1.7″ CMOS sensor with a 5x Zoom NIKKOR lens and shoots Full HD 1080p videos. Go full manual, connect to your friends with the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter, and geotag with a built-in GPS.
The Nikon COOLPIX S3500 sports a 20.1-MP CCD sensor for bright, sharp high-resolution photos and HD videos. It includes Vibration Reduction to eliminate blur, subject tracking autofocus, and for fast-moving subjects Motion Detection, which automatically kicks in and selects a faster shutter speed and higher ISO.
Panasonic is hard at work developing firmware updates for their Lumix GH3 mirrorless camera. The firmware for the GH3 is due out later this month. Meanwhile, however, they released firmware updates for the Sz5 and SZ9.
Canon announced a new high-sensitivity 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that can practically see in the dark. Petapixel released video clips they shot using the new sensor and it’s pretty incredible. Check it out:
Wacom teased a multitouch mobile tablet that might be released as soon as this summer. Their Intuos 5 is one of our favorite things, so we can’t wait to see what Wacom has up their sleeves.
Olympus might soon be delivering the E-P5 as their new flagship PEN camera. It’s rumored to resemble the Olympus PEN F in appearance, which means it will be a very pretty camera.
The first Polaroid Fotobar opened in Delray Beach, Florida this past Friday. It actually looks really cool! If you’re in Delray Beach, check it out.
Phase One introduced three IQ2 645-format medium format camera backs, which boast upwards of 80-megapixels in resolution and a minimum shutter speed of 1/10,000th of a second. If you have $40,000 to burn, you might want to check them out!
A Canadian photographer got in a copyright tussle with an Ottawa radio station for using her images without her consent:
The most recent copyright dispute to hit our radar is one between Canada-based Barbara Ann Studios and an Ottawa radio station called HOT 89.9. Each spring, the radio station runs a contest in which they get a couple married in 24-hours.
Ann isn’t a big fan of the contest, and so when she saw her image was being used to illustrate the station’s marketing kit, she began a dialogue with the company to get the image taken down and receive compensation for what amounted to commercial use of her image. That’s when things got ugly.
After contacting station owner NewsCap Radio, she initially received a very polite e-mail apologizing, explaining that they found the image via Google, and assuring her that they take copyright very seriously. However, after refusing the $40-$100 the company typically pays for this sort of use, and detailing the amount she expected to receive for the altered, commercial use of her image, the tone quickly turned negative. Google is automatically redirecting Picasa photographers to the Google+ images gallery, furthering its campaign to integrate its many services around Google+.
