Photo Frosh: “30-Day” Challenge #3 – Black & White

Challenge #3 of the 30 Day Photo Challenge by Expert Photography was Black & White.

Now, the Expert Photography tip suggested that I shoot in color and then edit it later. However, not having shot in black and white since my freshman year high school photo class, I found that shooting in black and white felt a little more natural to me, and in fact made me compose my photos differently.

Maybe this is because I’m a photo frosh, but shooting in black and white made me more deeply consider light and shape, more than I have thus far. In this way, I’d suggest that even the most experienced photographers shoot in black and white every once in a while, to jog their memories as to how fundamental light and shape are to photography.

While color captures moments, black and white makes moments more abstract. I had a lot of fun with this challenge. What do you folks think?

These shots taken with a Nikon D7000 and a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

Next challenge: Texture!
